This booklet presents three stories that demonstrate what occurs in sessions when a therapist is not empathic. It is not an academic publication. A few years ago, I retired from a successful private practice as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I then recalled that I had made certain kinds of errors as a therapist and decided to investigate why. High-level findings from neuroscience provided a key to the answer. Along the way, it occurred to me that documenting my path might create a shortcut for working therapists.

I am writing to recommend Diane Lieb Wilson's book to layman and therapists a like.Her well written and thoughtful focus on the importance of empathy in therapy, makes the book a good read.
For me empathy is on a scale from the neighbor who says, "I am sorry to hear this, I understand your situation because my dad went through something very similar". On the other end the therapist who says,"Why do you think you told me that story"? Diane Lieb Wilson lands squarely in the middle.
In an educational/inspirational format Ms. Wilson skillfully shares her personal motivations, experiences, and understanding to find and provide the much needed empathic therapy.
