I first met Bruce Newman on Google+. We are both poets who participate in various poetry groups and forums. I immediately knew that he was a voice that I needed to hear.Back on Google, his offerings would always spark my imagination and make me ponder different points of view concerning life and the futility of the commercial lifestyle lie.
This collection of poems will challenge the reader to see beyond the western facade of what is success, life and reality. In the end, Bruce tells us with his clarion warnings that we are more than what we have, and that life is more than the sum of things that you collect.
I totally and unequivocally recommend this short book of gems to anyone brave enough to think about life outside of "the American dream" our society wishes to sell you.

I have seen and read many poems and anthologies over the years. A lot of times people discuss about the past. However, Bruce Newman changes the rules. He expanded my mind and made me think as well as ponder things in my life.
Each poem is written splendidly and thorough. Newman is truly a talented author with ideas and a heart for his craft. If you are looking for a new set of poems and ones that will make you think-These are the ones for you!

If you desire poems that truly make you think about who you are and where you've been, or how distorted this world can be yet still know it's all in the "view" of the beholder, these poems really cause you to open your eyes. As I read many of them spoke some of my own thoughts, yet some caused me to take another look. I think it's a good read. You might need a dictionary for some parts, but still a good read. I like that it doesn't hold back. My favorite poem is "The Thread Count of Memories"....among others. Will definitely be looking for the next book.
A wonderful take on those "peripheral" topics! Mr. Newman has a way of grabbing the reader's attention, and delivering a fresh message. The subjects, here, are many, and diverse. But his down-to-earth, common-sense approach to each subject makes for great reading; many with a twist that you don't see coming. From the gloomy "Repo Man," to the humorous "Pitchfork And Torches;" from the stark surprise of "Self-Inflicted Wound," to the hope-filled and encouraging "Lifeline," this is more than just a "poetry" book. This is a book to read; savor; and come back to again and again. If you're a lover of poetry...and even if you're not...this is one that you'll be glad you tried.
This was a fun read. Bruce Newman offers some thought provoking and inspiring insights into life. There was a lot of little perceptions that were things I had long questioned in the back of my mind but never really took the time to dig into and fully explore. Newman kept me hooked throughout the book and I look forward to reading anything else he puts out.
A truly great collection of poetry. I would love to trade minds with Newman for a day; he's simply brilliant. I think he's able to connect with the reader whether they're a lover of poetry or simply love contemplating the world and other deep thoughts. Each poem is thought-provoking, relevant to todays society and relatable as well. This is a good size collection of poems, some are shorter and some longer, but they all fit nicely together. This really got my mind turning and I thoroughly enjoyed this; will definitely be checking out more from Newman.
Sometimes modern poetry just turns me off. It can either be trite or so topical that it doesn't stand the test of time. So when I purchased this book of poetry, I wasn't sure what to expect. Well let me tell you, I was truly surprised by this book of poetry.
Why surprised? Because there are so many wonderful works in this book, I don't know where to start. "My Persona Closet" is a favorite of mine, as it addresses the various personas we put on in life to please the people we are around. It struck close to home for me.
The variety of topics and the variety of lengths keeps a reader on their toes and makes sure that your attention never falters. I enjoyed that some of the pieces were longer with deeper exposition, while some pieces said just enough to make their point and didn't overstay their welcome.
In the end I am immensely glad that I purchased this book. The author has a wonderful voice and has very much to say. I'm glad that I got the chance to sit down and listen to him for a while.
I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to hear a new, fresh, modern voice in poetry.
